David Schwimmer Responds To The Criticism He Received For Supposedly Snubbing ‘Living Single’

The Friends actor got into a little bit of hot water after making comments on the fact that it would be great if there was an all-black cast of the popular 90s show. Hearing this, Erika Alexander, threw some shade at David Schwimmer, pointing out that her show, Living Single, was in fact not only basically exactly that but came before Friends and was pretty much the inspiration for it!

As you may have heard, David suggested not too long ago that it would be great is there was a version of Friends with an all-black cast!

Now, however, after getting criticized for not acknowledging Living Single, the actor insists that his comment was taken out of context.

At the time he said what he said, he was talking about the lack of diversity in Friends.

He told The Guardian that as far as he is concerned, if there was a reboot, none of the original cast members would want to be in it.

Instead, he had another idea – ‘maybe there should be an all-black ‘Friends’ or an all-Asian ‘Friends.’’

That’s when Erika Alexander responded, telling him that it already exists – Living Single – which aired its premiere a year before Friends did!

Here’s what David had to say: ‘Hi Erika. As you know, I was asked in an interview for ‘The Guardian’ how I felt about a reboot of ‘Friends’ following a conversation about diversity in the show, and so offered other possibility for a reimagining of the show today. I did not mean to imply that ‘Living Single’ had not existed or indeed had not come before ‘Friends,’ which I already knew it had.’

He went on to add that: ‘Please remember in interviews quotes are often pieced together and then taken out of context, and these quotes are repurposed in other articles by other people who’re trying to be provocative. I was a fan of ‘Living Single,’ and I was not implying ‘Friends’ was the first of its kind.’

The Friends star made it very clear that his comments were taken out of context and that is not in his control.
