Halsey Reveals She’s Studying For The Bar Exam During Quarantine
Halsey has found a unique way to keep herself busy during quarantine. The You Should Be Sad singer revealed this week that while on lockdown at home, she is studying constitutional law and is planning to take the bar exam.
In a recent Instagram post, the 25-year-old featured a series of pics, including one of a constitutional law book by Erwin Chemerinsky. Other images included bikini pics, a sunset, and a screencap from Avatar.

“I took my brace off my ankle cause it was itchy and now I need to put it back. I made a quiche and fresh spinach butternut squash ravioli,” wrote Halsey in the caption. “Law is fun but hard. Beautiful sky. Can’t stop watching avatar. and judging from the baby pic I’ve been a disassociating little freak who romanticizes the 70s for my whole life. That’s all, thank you.”
When a fan asked about the constitutional law book, the singer responded: “I’m studying to take the bar exam!”
The speculation is that Halsey is following in Kim Kardashian’s footsteps and taking an approach called “reading the bar.” California and three other states allow this approach, where people with 60 college credits can take a “baby bar” exam and then study for three more years before taking the real thing. Another option is to apprentice with a lawyer or judge after taking the “baby bar.”
According to Page Six, Halsey – who was born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane – dropped out of community college when she was 19. She hasn’t made it clear if she has acquired the 60 credits needed for “reading the bar.” But, she did say on Twitter that she still needs to “complete an apprenticeship among other things.”
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic halted tours and closed live music venues, Halsey announced that after finishing up her 2020 tour she would be taking a break for a “very long time.” She had scheduled a full slate of shows for the summer, but has since pushed them back to 2021.
Still, it seems she is ready to make some changes in her life, and pursuing a law degree might be taking priority over making new music. However, internet trolls aren’t too thrilled with her change of direction.
After revealing that she was studying for the bar exam, the trolls came out in full force to share their criticism. In a series of now-deleted tweets, Halsey clapped back after “someone on Reddit really tore into” the “studying for bar exams shtick” and asked why “all these celebrities” want to suddenly study for the bar exam.
“Why the f*ck is it a crime to educate myself beyond just wanting to pass the bar Qs? I am following a law school curriculum even though CA state doesn’t require a degree to take the exam,” wrote Halsey.
