Grimes Is Legally Selling Her Soul As Part Of Her Art Exhibition

Grimes wants to know the price of a human soul, so she will try to find out the exact dollar amount in an online art exhibition. The Canadian singer’s exhibition titled “Selling Out” features a collection of prints, drawings, and photographs. But, the title piece is reportedly legal documents that will entitle the buyer to a percentage of Grimes’ soul.

According to The New York Post, Grimes – whose given name is Claire Elise Boucher, but she prefers “C” – opened her online art exhibition in Los Angeles this week. And, the 32-year-old will be auctioning off numerous art pieces she has created.

Grimes told Bloomberg that she doesn’t think anyone will actually purchase a percentage of her soul, as she originally put a starting bid of $10 million on it.

“I didn’t want anyone to buy it, so I said we should just make it $10 million and then it probably won’t sell,” explained Grimes, adding that she talked about it with her lawyer. “The deeper we got with it, the more philosophically interesting it became.”

Grimes said that she really wanted to collaborate with her lawyer on art, and the idea of fantastical art in the form of legal documents seemed “very intriguing” to her.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Grimes admits that her “selling out” statement is coming at an unusual time. She said that with the current state of the world, she asked herself if she really wanted to put something up for $10 million. However, the new mom ultimately decided that she will take the “best offer” and leave it up to the free market to decide.

While her soul is quite pricey, other items in the exhibit – including “Seldon Crisis,” an edgy, yet whimsical print illustration that she created in 2016 – have a more affordable opening bid. The Miss Anthropocene singer says that she has been creating art for years, and it was something she did a decade before she touched a keyboard and started writing electro-pop music.

“I see myself as a visual artist first and foremost, and I’ve always felt strange that people know me for music,” said Grimes.

Her new art exhibit comes less than one month after she welcomed son X Æ A-Xi (who she calls “Little X,” for short) with boyfriend Elon Musk.
