Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Her Struggle With Depression During A Chat With Demi Lovato

Kelly Clarkson and Demi Lovato had a very important virtual chat about both the Black Lives Matter movement and mental health during a new interview for The Kelly Clarkson Show. Here’s what they had to say!

Amid their candid chat, Kelly opened up about her depression, praising Demi for how open she has always been about her mental health struggles.

‘I love how open you are about mental health because I have similar issues, and I suffer from depression. I think that a lot of people, especially in the creative world or from childhood even, [are] kind of trained to just keep going and ‘you can handle it,’ especially as a woman it’s like, ‘Don’t let them see you sweat.’’

Well, Demi had only great things to say about the American Idol alum as well, calling her genuine and brave as well.

Demi sweetly praised the fellow singer, saying that ‘You were, like, the first idol that I ever had, and I wouldn’t be the artist or even the person that I am with being so outspoken, and vulnerable, and fearless if I hadn’t had you to look up to.’

The talk show host went on to admit that mental health for her takes constant work.

She explained to Demi that ‘Even when you overcome something, they’re like, ‘OK, she’s already overcome it.’ I’m like, ‘No, no that’s a daily effort in, like, trying to be positive….That’s not, like, a given. Like, you are just over it, and you went to some magical therapy session, and it’s over.’

As mentioned before, the artists also touched upon the Black Lives Matter movement as the protests against racial inequality and police brutality continue.

Demi stressed that the first step in achieving positive and long-lasting change is by ‘educating ourselves,’ especially now since everyone has so much free time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
