Suicide Squad Director David Ayer Reveals That His Cut Was Too ‘Dark’ For The Studio
A new tweet from David Ayer, the director of the film, Suicide Squad, revealed that the studios actually had him change the movie because it was “too dark.”
Currently, the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League is coming out in the following year, and now, fans are asking for the director’s cut of other successful films as well, including Suicide Squad.
Movie Web reported today that David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was another example of a film that was cut dramatically to meet the demands of the studio. Fans online have been persistently asking for directors’ cuts of other movies, and David Ayer, himself, has been apart of the social media discussion.
When a fan posted two pictures of Joker on Twitter, one from the theatrical cut and the other from the director’s cut, Ayer explained there were definitely some differences between the two versions of the film, especially in relation to Joker.
According to Ayer on his Twitter account, the film was reshot because the tone was “too dark.” The director explained that he took a lot of inspiration from the director, Christopher Nolan, and there were even some great scenes between Joker and Harley.
Ayer says that Joker was “terrifying” and Margot Robbie’s character, Harley, was “complex.” Before the film came to be, Suicide Squad was described by people online and the mainstream media as the next The Dark Knight.
This was reshot because the tone was “too dark” – My first act was a normally constructed film. I took my inspiration from Nolan. There were real scenes with incredible acting between Jared and Margot. Joker was terrifying. Harley was complex. https://t.co/KeJHmI6EA7

It was supposed to be a ground-breaking movie, but as it turns out, it didn’t go down that way. Ayer says that much of the disappointment had to do with studio executives messing around with the narrative, plot, and its tonality.
Of course, Joker came out just a couple of years later and it was similarly dark. Suicide Squad, Ayer explained, was created using the same tonality and spirit. Reportedly, Suicide Squad was supposed to conform to a theme similar to other movies in the DCEU, from Warner Brothers.
Reportedly, James Gunn is coming out with his own version of Suicide Squad, and he has publicly supported the release of Ayer’s Cut.
