Dortmund 0-2 Mainz: Sloppy BVB schooled by minows after Bayern winning title

Mainz claimed a stunning 2-0 win at Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, boosting their survival chances.

Borussia Dortmund's grip on second in the Bundesliga has loosened slightly after they suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to struggling Mainz, who took a huge step towards safety.

Dortmund had seen Bayern Munich clinch an eighth successive Bundesliga crown on Tuesday, and perhaps the disappointment combined with the realisation of their title hopes being over was to blame for a lacklustre performance at Signal Iduna Park.

For all of their monopolisation of the ball, Dortmund struggled to supply Erling Haaland with adequate service and Mainz took a shock lead into the break thanks to Jonathan Burkardt's header at the end of a slick counter.

Dortmund work the ball out to Hakimi out on the right who lofts a cross in. Guerreiro nods it down at the far post for Witsel whose shot from inside the box is blocked! That's the first half-chance of the game for Dortmund.

This came from nothing! Mateta drops off and rolls the ball wide to Baku who crosses in first time. Burkardt ghosts into the area and powers a satisfying header into the bottom left corner. He pumps his fists in celebration!

49' Penalty Goal! Dortmund 0-2 Mainz (Latza)

Burki makes two smart saves in a row, first from Mateta then from Onisiwo who has a pop from distance. The keeper can only push the ball as far as Latza though, who Hummels bundles over. 

73' Muller denies Hakimi's free-kick

Hakimi is single-handedly trying to drag Dortmund back into this. Latza brings down Guerreiro in Mainz's half and Hakimi's free-kick is tipped over the crossbar by Muller! It was inches away from hitting the top right corner.

79' Ardent conflict between Guerreiro and Latza

Things are starting to get a bit ill-tempered. Guerreiro is fouled by Latza and pokes Latza in the face. Naughty. He gets a yellow card.
