Princess Beatrice’s Wedding Dress & Tiara Were Reportedly Second-Hand

Princess Beatrice – daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York – married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a small, private ceremony on Friday in front of family and close friends. The Princess of York opted for a low-key affair as opposed to a traditional, large royal wedding after she had to cancel her original May wedding date due to COVID-19. Beatrice also opted to wear a second-hand dress and tiara.

However, when your grandmother is the Queen of England, the hand-me-downs can be quite exquisite. According to People magazine, Princess Beatrice wore a vintage Peau de Soie taffeta dress that Queen Elizabeth first wore back in 1962, and she borrowed the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara that the monarch wore on her own wedding day in 1947 when she married Prince Philip.

Princess Anne, the Queen’s daughter, also wore the tiara on her wedding day in 1973. But, an insider says that Her Majesty saved it specifically for her oldest granddaughter.

“The Queen saved this grand tiara specifically for Beatrice. It was always reserved for her as they are exceptionally close,” dished an insider, adding that it was “arguably the most sentimental [piece] lent from the Queen yet.”

The 31-year-old royal bride wore a stunning, sleeveless ivory gown that features a waterfall of embroidery that starts at the bodice and goes down to the thigh. The dress also had embellished shoulder straps and beading at the waist.

Princess Beatrice made the Norman Hartnell-designed dress her own by adding sheer, puffed sleeves on the shoulder straps and removing the underskirts and puff-ball skirt. This gave the dress a more romantic, flowy feel with simple silk trim on the hem.

Her majesty first wore the gown on May 4, 1961 at a state dinner held at the British Embassy in Rome in honor of then Italian President Giovanni Gronchi. Queen Elizabeth accessorized the dress with a fur stole and a ceremonial sash.

Queen Elizabeth was in attendance at Princess Beatrice’s wedding in Windsor at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge. The small wedding party and 20 guests practiced social distancing and worked within government guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A royal communications press release said that following those guidelines meant there were no hymns sung, but a selection of music was played. They also played the National Anthem, but it was not sung.
