‘Lion King’ Enjoys One Of The Best Box Offices EVER Despite Critics’ Lukewarm Response!

No matter what the critics may have to say about it, the live-action remake of The Lion King received a TON of positive attention from fans and viewers — like, nearly $200 million worth in the first weekend in theaters!

According to box office results from the weekend, the re-boot took in exactly $185 million across the North American media market (both the U.S. and Canada), which far surpassed everything expectations-wise and went well beyond what the projections were suggesting.

It’s a major surprised for the Jon Favreau film featuring Beyoncé and others, considering the fact that critics kind of panned the move in the first place. According to both Rotten Tomatoes and MegaCritic, the movie has just a 55% rating, which is seriously low for a movie like this, and with a budget like this.

But nobody told the fans, who shelled out so much money for it over the weekend that it made the re-boot the ninth-ever highest-grossing opening weekend in movie history, according to THR and several other outlets reporting the weekend in theaters!!! Think Avengers: Endgame, or Avatar, or even Titanic… THAT is the kind of company that Lion King is in with this major weekend at the box office.

There are some legitimate gripes about the live-action version of the Disney classic as it is here, including the lions’ (lack of) facial expressions and some other issues with the CGI and a few other things that, broadly, are legitimate complaints and serious concerns as far as the quality of filmmaking goes. But it’s admittedly smaller stuff compared to the biggest thing here: the audience response. And it’s pretty clear that no matter what, nostalgia sells — especially when it’s Disney expertly re-packaging itself with new enticements and more along the way.

Above all, make no mistake about this one: Lion King won the box office and overtook all the weekend news over the last few days, as it probably well should have. Beyoncé and company — despite some limited actual screen time with certainly some flaws in production and execution — truly have themselves a no-doubt number one hit on their hands. And it can only get stronger and ride out better from here!!!
